Distinguished Scholars Give Lectures to International Summer School of SPSPA, UESTC



From the 20th to 21st of July 2015, the School of Political Science and Public Administration (SPSPA) of University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) held its International Summer School. The lectures were conducted at the Zonghe Building Room 401, Qingshuihe Campus. In total, 55 students from nine schools registered in this class.

Chris Hamnett, Professor Emeritus of King's College London and Alexander Polunov, vice-dean of the School of Public Administration at Moscow State University were both invited by the School of Political Science and Public Administration to teach students through two public quality oriented educational elective courses Economics and Social Change in Modern Societies and Ethnic Relations in Russia and the World respectively.

In the class of Economics and Social Change in Modern Societies, Chris Hamnett, described the rise of China under the background of globalization from the perspective of economic development. The atmospheric nature of the class was active and interactive. The lecture contents covered rich subject materials. In addition, Chris Hamnett, centering on rconomics and social change in modern societies, introduced a series of influences on economic structure, social segregation, urban regeneration, welfare state policy, etc. in western cities, caused by changes in population and occupational structure, the global financial crisis, international migration, and housing market among others.

In Ethnic Relations in Russia and the World, Alexander Polunov, taking the ethnic relations in Russia as the theme, represented the ethnicity problem’s influencing Russian politics, the formation and disintegration of Soviet, and the ethno-social formation and the ethno-policy of Russian Federation. The lecture made students have more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the process of Russian formation as a multi-ethnic state and also improved their understanding of the ethnic conflicts in Russia and the world.

International Summer School of SPSPA, UESTC aims to help students broaden their knowledge, improve humanistic quality, learn about academic frontiers and cultivate the ability to look and solve issues from the international perspective.

Chris Hamnett, Emeritus Professor of King's College London, mainly focuses on housing studies, urban research, land use, and education inequity in his academic research.He is regarded as a leading British expert on housing wealth and inheritance and a leading researcher in the fields of social polarization, gentrification and housing. He also did research overseas by visiting universities in America, the Netherlands, Australia, France, China, etc.

Alexander Polunov, is a full Professor and vice-dean of the School of Public Administration at Moscow State University. His teaching and research interests lie in Orthodox Church in the social and political life of imperial Russia, Russian monarchy, bureaucracy and reforms in late imperial period, and conservatism in late imperial Russia. With a good command of Russian, English, French, and German, he has published lots of articles in western languages and was once a visiting scholar or professor in universities in France, the Great Britain, America, and German.
