On September18, 2016, Antoinette A. Samuel, the deputy executive director of National League of Cities, USA visited SPSPAofUESTC and delivered a lecture on The Sharing Economy: Sharing and The City. The lecture was moderated by Prof. ZhaoShurong, Director of international Exchange Center of SPSPA.

Beforelecture, Prof. Tang Zhiwei, the dean of the School of Political Science and Public Administrationpresented a certificated of appointment to Mrs. Antoinette as the adjunct professor of SPSPA. A cooperation agreement was also signed between National League of Cities (NLC) and SPSPA, UESTC to promote the disciplinary development in urban studies.

In her introduction, Mrs. Antoinette gave three compelling reasons why we need to do the sharing economy. Urbanization is the first factor. She said, the world is increasingly urbanizing at a scale unprecedented in human history. If projections hold,in her estimation more than 70% of individuals worldwide will live in urbanized areas by 2050.The second factorisabout the economics. She pointed out that the cost of living in cities is so high and people have less money. Due to this factor, people are trying to device new ways to bring in income, and the peer to peer economy is one of those ways. The last factor she discussed was what she called “User Preference/Lifestyle.”She identified that user preference is as a result of advancement in technology. “Five years ago, smartphones were not ubiquitous but now we live in an age of the Internet which refers to the plethora of ‘smart’ technologies inundating the market today,” she opined.

To mitigate the impacts of the sharing economy, Mrs. Antoinette pointed out that the National League of Cities (NLC) has released three reports. She said these reports focus on home-sharing and ridesharing because United State has placed high premium on both issues in recent years.
During the discussion session, participants conducted in-depth discourse with Mrs. Antoinette to get more understanding on the sharing economy and how it can benefit for other countries.
